APR 07, 2005 (newstodate): Romanian city Sibiu/Hermannstadt is taking the initial steps towards a major modernisation and expansion of its airport .
Sibiu Airport has thus opened an international tender for legal, financial and technical consultancy services during the first phase of the project stretching until October 31, 2005, preparing a tender for projecting and construction of a renovated runway, taxiway and apron surfaces, modernisation of existing and construction of a new passenger terminal and new technical equipment.
Construction work on the most pertinent elements is expected to start in 2006, and the project will be fully terminated by mid-2008.
Together with Luxembourg, Sibiu/Hermannstadt will take on the role as European Cultural Capital in 2007, and Sibiu expects significantly increasing air traffic volumes from the event.
Air cargo facilities will be targetted by a later stage of the project that will also enjoy EU financial support.
The succesful consultant emerging from the current tender will be responsible for defining a project time schedule, applying for approbations, and proposing viable financing venues as part of a feasibility study and the subsequent opening of a final tender.
