APR 01, 2005 (newstodate): The future of the AN-124 freighter has been secured after the adoption of a business plan to put the Ruslan back into production, and a full fleet modernization program.
Top-level representatives from Ukrainean and Russian state agencies, operators and manufacturers met on March 25 at the Russian Federal Agency of production, energy and industry to finalise the issues around the unique freighter program.
The contract signed focusses on a five year modernisation plan to bring the existing fleet of AN-124-100 Ruslan aircraft up to its full 150 tonne capacity and fulfilling all the ICAO requirements.
The agenda also highlighted the intention to put the AN-124 back into production with an initial production of 15 aircraft.
In cooperation with Volga-Dnepr, the largest operator of AN-124-100 aircraft, the Antonov Design Bureau and other parties from Russia and the Ukraine are now preparing to restore production of the Ruslan freighter at the Aviastar factory in Ulianovsk.
The new production AN-124 will be equipped with new avionic systems and new engines providing larger uplift capacity and longer range.
