APR 20, 2005 (newstodate): Plans for a new export airport dedicated to freighter flights with Norwegian perishables are gaining momentum.
A feasibility study of Lakselv Banak Airport's potentials for becoming a prime export gateway has generated convincing evidence, and consultants are now in the final stages of negotiations with key companies among producers, transporting and logistics companies and importers in Asian and American markets to finalise the eventual concept.
-As we are now at a very sensitive stage of the project, we cannot reveal the concrete details but we hope and expect that freighter traffic will start from Banak this year already, says Bjorn Soderholm, Porsager county mayor.
-Located close to the Polar circle, Banak airport has been short-listed as the prime option for a new Norwegian export airport to utilise the new traffic lanes through Russian airspace, which will save significantly on total transport times and enhance the quality of services, he says.
-Consultants are also considering the potentials of return freight from the Asian destinations, and also here findings are encouraging.
Mr Soderholm confirms that negoatiations with one or two freighter aircraft operators are also progressing very positively.
