MAR 07, 2005 (newstodate): If the Faroe Islands' civil aviation is to unfold fully, Vagar Airport's infrastructure must be upgraded.
-We are seeing passengers volumes increasing steadily, with growth at 4.4 percent during January and February. On the other hand full flights leave little capacity for air cargo, so the volume of airfreight has decreased by 20.2 percent during the first two months of the year, says Finnbogi Niclasen, Vagar Airport director.
Before the politicians is a plan for runway extension from the current 1,200 to 1,600 metres which would allow for Airbus A320/Boeing 737 operations without the current take-off weight restrictions also severely restricting airfreight potentials.
Also comprised by the plan is the construction of improved terminal facilities including Schengen separation.
