MAR 04,2005 (newstodate): Latvian airport Liepaja, 210 km west of Riga, is hoping for EU support for a project to upgrade its technical facilities.
The project, estimated to cost some 5.6 million euro and to be completed by 2007, will comprise upgrading and resurfacing of the 2,002 meter long runway, and installation of a new ligting system.
-A feasibility study has been completed by the Latvian Ministry of Transport, and we actually finished all preparations one year ago but so far nothing has happened, says an airport spokesman.
In 2000 Liepaja City Council invested in a reconstruction of the airport's passenger terminal, and plans are to turn Liepaja Airport into an efficient regional airport in conformance with EU standards.
The airport was originally built for military purpose but was transferred to civil authority in 1960 when a route network serving Riga and destination in the Soviet Union was established.
The airport is now part of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone.
