MAR 17, 2005 (newstodate): The EU Commission has warned Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Ireland, Spain, and Malta that the countries' bilateral treaties on aviation services with the US are not in line with EU laws.
The EU Commision says that the treaties include a so-called nationality clause, which provides advantageous conditions to the respective signatory states. According to the Commission this is a breach of EU legislation.
The Commission will instead boost the political process to sign an EU open skies treaty with the US, negotiated since 2003, and EU Commission VP Jacques Barrot will visit Washington on MArch 21 and 22 to review the progress of negoatiations between the two parties.
