MAR 08, 2005 (newstodate): Budapest Airport's plans to construct a new cargo and logistics centre at the airport has met with an at least temporary setback.
The airport recently acquired a majority stake in a 20 hectare site to build an air cargo and logistics base by 2006.
Part of an over-all strategy to Make Budapest Ferihegy Airport a leading cargo hub in Central Europe, the acquisition has instead provoked fierce political attacks and a demand for an investigation into the deal.
-We are under political attacks. The sad part is that we have now to delay proceeding with the cargo base until the situation calms down again, says a local industry source.
In 2004, the airport generated a total of some 80,000 tonnes of air cargo, according to unofficial figures.
