MAR 22, 2005 (newstodate): Russian carrier Transaero becomes the country's first Boeing 747 passenger aircraft operator.
Transaero has signed a leasing contract for four ex-Virgin Atlantic Boeing slated to join the fleet by mid-summer 2005.
Initially, Transaero will operate the jumbo jets on routes to Croatia, Spain and Tunis during the summer season.
Later the aircraft will be used to expand the airline's route network to comprise Southeast Asia, Australia and Latin America.
The latest order adds further momentum to the airline's strategic decision on fleet expansion, including a lease agreement signed in February with FLC for delivery of a total of 10 TU-214 aircraft over the years 2005-2007.
