MAR 30, 2005 (newstodate): Air Astana will take over the Kazakh capital's international airport.
Air Astana, set up in 2001 and owned by BAE Systems, 49 percent, and the Kazakh state, 51 percent, is the country's largest airline providing 21 international and 17 domestic flights.
In 2004 the ISO 90001 certified Astana International Airport generated a total 10,160 flight operations, expected to rise in 2005 to about 15,000 flight operations.
To boost the standing of its new capital since 1997, Kazakhstan is now requiring foreign airlines operating into the country to add Astana to their network.
Among the airlines currently serving Kazakhstan are Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Transaero and Turkish Airlines that all operate routes into the country's former capital, Almaty
