MAR 01, 2005 (newstodate): Africa remains the most unsafe continent as to air traffic.
In 2003 Africa's combined share of the world's flight departures was a modest three percent. Yet the continent accounted for 28 percent of the world's air safety-related fatal accidents.
Highest on the list on African states with poor air safety ranks the Democratic Republic of Congo, followed by Angola, Nigeria, Sudan and Kenya.
Between 1994 and 2003, 168 out of 210 aircraft accident involved aircraft in non-scheduled services including cargo, charter and ad-hoc operations.
These figures and depressing statistics were presented by Christian Folly-Kossi, the African Airlines Association's Secretary General, during a conference on African Air Safety.
Besides the effect on air safety from the ongoing wars on the continent, African aviation is also dominated by ageing airline fleets.
In 2003, the average age of the fleet was 20 years.
Also contributing to the poor safety record is the fact that more than half of all cargo operations in Africa take place at night.
