FEB 14, 2005 (newstodate): To boost the standing of its new capital, Kazakhstan will demand foreign airlines operating into the country to add Astana to their network.
Among the airlines currently serving Kazakhstan are Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Transaero and Turkish Airlines that all operate routes into the country's former capital Almaty.
Kazakhstan will reportedly enforce the demand as from September 1.
The airlines will not, however, be required to leave Almaty, the country's largest city, but they must extend the routing to include Astana as well, a local source says.
