FEB 22, 2005 (newstodate): The Tashkent-based Chkalov Aircraft Manufacturer failed to attract investors' interest in a recent, but little published tender for 25.6 percent of the stock, and the country has now been forced to cancel the auction.
The Republic of Uzbekistan owns 51 percent of the shares, 10 percent are held by staff, while The National Foreign Economic Bank and the Agency of Foreign Economic Contacts each hold 6.7 percent.
Central Asia's only aircraft manufacturer, Chkalov was famed for its capacity to build aircraft including IL-76 and other popular and versatile aircraft, but the plant has not been able to pay its staff since October, 2004.
Instead of opening a new tender, the Uzbekistan government will now approach specific potential investors directly, sources say.
