FEB 21, 2005 (newstodate): After cancelling its cargo sales cooperation with Finnair, British Airways World Cargo will now monitor the Finnish cargo GSA scene and sign a contract within four to six weeks.
-We never entered a regular cargo GSA contract with Finnair Cargo as this was not permitted by EU regulations, both parties being members of the oneworld alliance, says Chris A Nielen, BAWC Area Manager Benelux & Nordic.
-Based on mutual agreement we decided last week to cancel the cooperation as we from our side never experienced the growth in the market we had hoped for, he says.
-Signing a regular cargo GSA contract should therefore provide us with a partner that would bring added growth and an impetus to the standing of BAWC in the Finnish market that today generates only between five and ten percent of our total Nordic sales.
Mr Nielen acknowledes the fact that BAWC's capacity in the Finnish market is stricly limited by the cargo holds of the Airbus A319/A320 fleet of aircraft currently operated by BA.
-The Finnish air cargo market is dominated by big volume shippers, so we are in a demanding position. With an energetic cargo GSA we hope to gain market shares enough to press the development towards a Nordic integration into BAWC's European Shorthaul Freighter program, or expanded cargo trucking systems to allow for better services, says Chris A Nielen.
