Dec 21, 2005 (newstodate): A shift in the movement of Chinese exports to Russia is resulting in lower air cargo volumes through Moscow's airports.
Chinese exporters increasingly prefer to send cargo by rail transportation rather than by air as it is cheaper, according to a spokesman for Moscow Domodedovo Airport's marketing team.
This trend has affected not only Domodedovo, but other airports in the Moscow region as well.
However, as the geographical structure of the
cargo traffic in all airports varies, Domodovo and Vnukovo are the most affected.
In 2004, among Moscow's airports Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo accounted for 52.4, 42.0, and 5.5 percent, respectively, of the combined total of 392,000 tonnes of air cargo.
Domodedovo Airport now expects to see its share decreaseing by some 10 percentage points in 2005, and its total volume down by 37 percent, to 116,000 tonnes.
