Dec 22, 2005 (newstodate): Erbil Hawler Airport in the Kurdish part of Iraq is planning for a major boom in passenger and cargo traffic by an increasing number of international airlines.
Officially opened on April 29, 2005, the airport has a new 2,800 m runway and a new 1,500 sq m passenger terminal, but plans are in the pipeline for a second runway and a terminal three times the size of the current facility, scheduled to be commissioned in Q1, 2007.
Weekly traffic volumes are now around 1,000 passenger by between 20 and 30 direct flights from Amman, Dubai, Frankfurt and Stockholm, in addition to flights from Beirut, Cairo, and Istanbul via Baghdad.
High on the list of prospected new operations are direct flights from Austria, UK and Turkey.
Cargo operations are also increasingly important, with daily IL-76 and C-17 operations, and the airport's plans include building of a new cargo facility at the airport.
