Dec 7, 2005 (newstodate): In a meeting on December 14, the Tblisi Airport supervisory board will appoint a new airport director for Tblisi Airport.
The former director was recalled on December 2, due to strong criticism over lack of competence and management skills.
Work on a major airport modernisation project will now start as the Turkish consortium TAV-Urban has been called in to replace the Turkish Celebi Group, Luxembourg-based GTS, and the U.S. A&J that won the tender in May.
According to the new plans, the existing airport will be closed down and turned into a hotel area, while a new airport will be designed to accomodate 2,000 passengers per hour.
In total, TAV-Urban will spend USD95 million on construction of new airports in Tbilisi and Batumi, with airport management rights for 16 years
