Dec 7, 2005 (newstodate): Finnair has announced its decision to acquire 12 new Airbus wide-body aircraft, including nine A350-900 and three A340-300 aircraft, with options for another four A350 and an unannounced number of A340 aircraft.
To cope with strong growth in the Asian traffic, the A340 aircraft will be acquired earlier, in 2007-08, the company says.
The first A350 wil enter service with Finnair in 2011, and deliveries will continue till 2013.
Next year Finnair will add its eighth MD-11 to satisfy increasing demand in Asian traffic, but the MD-11 aircraft will be phased out from the Finnair fleet by 2012.
Over a five-year period, Finnair has ordered 29 Airbus A320 series aircraft, in three different sizes, for use in its European traffic and on long domestic routes.
As part of the fleet modernisation, Finnair will withdraw the remaining Boeing MD-80 aircraft by summer 2006.
