Dec 9, 2005 (newstodate): In Finland, conflicting statistics make any appraisal of the air cargo market a doubtful venture.
Official CAA cargo figures show a sustained decline in cargo volumes through 2005, ending in a decrease around four percent, while Finnair Cargo has reported a significant growth throughout the year.
In the recent study on the Finnish air cargo, the market is seen as in continuous growth as well.
-We certainly deplore the lack of reliable statistics, says Mika Seppaelae, Lufthansa Cargo Finland sales manager.
-Lufthansa Cargo has been growing nicely through 2005, seeing a 9-10 percent growth in sales, and we are at least the second largest player in Finland based on sales figures.
-It is also safe to assume that the Finnish import market has been booming this year, probably expanding by 40-50 percent. It is, however, again difficult to say if this is really Finnish imports, or if the bulk continues from Finland by trucks into Russia. Helsinki is definitely a gateway to Russia, with several trucking companies operating trucking terminals close to the Russian border.
