Dec 7, 2005 (newstodate): Boeing's decision to launch the Boeing 747-8 will generate new business for Swedish company Volvo Aero.
Volvo Aero is a partner to GE that produces the single engine type, GEnx, to be offered to customers.
The same engine is also offered to customers of Boeing's Dreamliner and the Airbus A350 aircraft.
Extensive work will be required, however, to adapt the engine to the special requirements and prerequisites applying for each of these aircraft types, and Volvo Aero has designated a special engineering team consisting of some 50 persons to adapt the engine for the Boeing 747-8.
Volvo Aero's responsibility in the partnership with GE with respect to the GEnx includes design, development, manufacture and product support of the fan hub frame, the turbine rear frame and the booster spool.
The GEnx engine for the 747-8 will enter testing in 2007 and be placed in commercial service during 2009.
Being launched as both a passenger and a cargo aircraft program, the freighter version is so far alone in fetching orders, with 10 aircraft to Cargolux, and eight aircraft to Nippon Cargo Airlines.
