Dec 7, 2005 (newstodate): Armenian Yerevan Airport is still hampered by extremely thick fog, forcing most of the civil aircraft to operate at Gyumri Shirak Airport instead.
Armenia has contracted Thales to install a new ILS/DME landing system as part of its CAT III infrastructure, to become operational by December 20. But even this equipment could hardly save Yerevan from being closed down, sources say.
Among others, flights to Yerevan from Moscow, Sochi, Novosibirsk, Anapa, Krasnodar, Rostov, Ashgabat, Dubai, Amsterdam, Paris and other destinations have beed rerouted to Gyumri instead.
