Nov 10, 2005 (newstodate): Contrary to media speculations, no decision has been reached on the issue of upgrading the runway at Vagar Airport, the Faroe Islands.
A joint Danish/Faroese working group has been established to produce a conclusive report that will be presented to the political assembly, the Lagtinget, on December 1.
After this, politicians will evaluate various alternative improvements to the current situation at the airport with severe weight penalties due to a runway only 1,250 metres long.
Prior attempts to reach a decision on entending the runway have failed, but this time the agenda of the working group has been defined jointly by the Danish prime minister and the Faroese Lagmand, and industry sources expect this to warrant a final conclusion and a project to be realised.
After political negotiations have been finalised, the project may be designed during 2006, with construction work to start in 2007, sources say.
