Nov 9, 2005 (newstodate): Riga Airport, Latvia, is consolidating its position as the largest cargo airport in the three Baltic states.
During the first 10 months of 2005, Riga Airport generated a total of 14,300 tonnes of air cargo, with Tallinn Airport in Estonia, 7,900 tonnes, second, and Vilnius, Lithuania, third with a total of 4,300 tonnes.
Most of Riga Airport's airfreight is still ex-China shipments destined for and transferred to Russia.
70 percent of this ex-China freight is carried on freighters.
According to reports, Latvia's transport minister is determined to develop Riga Airport further, including extension of the runway from currently 2,600 to 3,200 meters, and construction of a new airport passenger terminal with a capacity of handling up to 10 million passengers per year.
The ambition is to cement Riga Airport as a valid alternative to neighbouring Scandinavian hubs now dominating the region.
