Nov 29, 2005 (newstodate): Today's freighter capacity out of Norway on routes to the Far East is abundant, warranting difficulties for the ongoing project to start a new service.
As reported earlier by newstodate, a project group named North Atlantic Cargo is currently working to set up a new MD-11 or DC-10 freighter service from Oslo to yet-unspecified destinations in the Far East.
-The timing may not be too promising, says a leading Norwegian freight forwarder specilised in the Norwegian salmon logistics.
-There are currently few potentials for opening new Far Eastern markets, and uplift capacity is now sufficient to cater to the traffic, with low rates and efficient services.
Japan remains the dominating market for Norwegian fresh salmon, China holds rich potentials, and besides exports to Singapore and Taiwan there are few significant openings left.
-Only India is still largely absent due to harsh Indian customs barriers. This is being negotiated between the governments of Norway and India, but we do not foresee any immediate solution. On the other hand, once constraints are lifted India will surely become a major driver for our industry, he says.
