Nov 22, 2005 (newstodate): From January 1, 2006, runway capacity will increase by 5 percent to 80 operations an hour at Finland's Helsinki Vantaa Airport.
The increase in capacity comes through the introduction of new approach procedures enabling aircraft simultaneous landing on two runways.
Phase one that was launched on November 7 allows aircraft arriving at Helsinki-Vantaa to land at frequent intervals on parallel runways 1 and 3 alternately.
In Phase 2, independent procedures will be introduced to enable aircraft to land simultaneously on two parallel runways.
Runway capacity was 48 operations an hour in 2002, before Runway 3 entered commercial service.
