Nov 15, 2005 (newstodate): FAA has proposed a rule that would make aviation significantly safer by requiring more than 3,200 existing and certain new large passenger jets to reduce flammability levels of fuel tank vapors.
The FAA proposal would apply to new large airplane designs.
In addition, the FAA would require a retrofit of more than 3,200 Airbus and Boeing aircraft with center wing fuel tanks over seven years of age.
Initially, this would require retrofit of tanks on 1,149 Boeing 737, 93 Boeing 747, and 906 Airbus A320 in US aircraft fleets.
Further down the line come retrofit of 44 Airbus A330, 581 Boeing 757, 347 Boeing 676, and 157 Boeing 777 aircraft.
