Nov 1, 2005 (newstodate): Budapest Ferihegy Airport expects cargo volumes to increase significantly over the next few years.
In 2001, the airport generated a total of 45,211 tonnes of cargo, and this has now increased to about 80,000 tonnes.
Some sources foresee a total volume of 108,000 tones in 2012, and 150,000 tonnes in 2015.
To facilitate the growth, the airport operator acquired 20 ha of land to build a new cargo terminal, but these plans were stalled by the ongoing and still unsettled privatisation.
One third, or 12,600 tonnes, of the airport's current volumes are generated by integrators TNT and UPS, and this volume could increase to 43,000 tonnes by 2015, sources say.
The need for a new cargo terminal to support the airport's ambitions of becoming an important East-West traffic hub is therefore most pressing.
