Nov 24, 2005 (newstodate): By mid-December, Slovenian carrier Adria Airways will host a meeting to discuss the development of markets and the challenges faced by airlines and the entire aviation sector in the new EU member states.
Participants will include representatives of the European Commission, airlines and governments from these countries.
Speaking at the recent AEA meeting on November 18 in Lisbon, EU's Commissioner for Transport Jacques Barrot emphasized the importance of the competitiveness of Europe's aviation industry and the development of regulations that will allow free market conditions and ensure high aviation safety standards.
Mr Barrot especially highlighted the needs and difficulties faced by airlines in the new EU member states and candidate countries, promising them assistance from the European Commission.
-These airlines are especially vulnerable because of increased fuel costs and competition from both large and low-fare airlines, as well as unsuitable infrastructure, and this assistance is therefore vital for them, he said.
