Oct 13, 2005 (newstodate): Export of fresh Norwegian salmon to Japan is again gaining momentum after a prolonged period of stagnation.
-We are seeing volumes up again, and the trend is positive, says Arild Jaabak, Schenker Northern Cargo managing director.
-Several reasons were behind the stagnation, including excessive pricing driven by EU's system of mimimum prices, and increasing competition from other producers.
-The new positive trend, however, is also the result from the Norwegian salmon farmers' product development, bringing a range of new products to the global markets.
-While Japan remains the single largest market, China and Hong Kong are clearly the future dynamos of growth, as is also the case with India. So the prospects are encouraging, says Mr Jaabak.
Both Aeroflot, Korean Air Cargo, and from this month: Lufthansa Cargo/Japan Airlines Cargo now operate DC-10 and Boeing 747 freighters on routes from Oslo to the Far East, totalling six departures per week.
