OCT 07, 2005 (newstodate): Russia now indicates willingness to live up to the agreement reached with EU during the European Conference of Ministers of Transport in Moscow, May 2005.
At a recent press conference, the Russian transport minister said Russia will cancel, by 2014, the overflight dues imposed on western airlines using the new trans-polar air routes via Siberia.
This complies with the earlier agreement with EU, setting 2013 as the end-date for the current exhorbitant overflight charges levied by Russia, and collected by Aeroflot as an indirect state subsidy.
These charges are estimated to generate some USD235-300 million annually, and have kept traffic low on the new route including Arctica 1.
Using the new airlanes, western and other airlines would save significantly on fuel consumtion and flying time on routes between European and Asian destinations.
