Oct 17, 2005 (newstodate): Atlantic Airways has not seen major changes in the Faroe Islands' cargo market since the pull-out from the market by Maersk Air in October, 2004.
-We have basically been able to satisfy the demand for air cargo uplift, and our postal services have performed well, says Magni Arge, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-It is fair to say that the problems with airfreight to and from the Faroe Islands have remained more or less unchanged. We fly up to five times daily between Vagar and Denmark, but of course some forwarders always say they could need more capacity.
-The demand has, however, been rather stable, reflecting the economic stagnation that has left little room for expansion.
-With larger aircraft in the future, like e.g. the Airbus A319 now being evaluated against the Boeing 737-700 and the Embraer 190, capacity would of course increase, especially if a political decision was reached on the expansion of Vagar Airport's short runway.
-The issue of a freighter service remains a "chicken & egg" question: forwarders say they could fill a freighter if only an airline would introduce the service, but when the question is on the table we still do not see any firm commitment that could warrant a launch. So the issue remains hypothetical, says Mr Arge.
