Oct 28, 2005 (newstodate): While still not publicly announced, industry sources confirm that the Aeroflot board of directors have decided on a plan to corporatise Aeroflot Cargo as an independent company before the end of this year already.
The move will require the new company to apply for and receive its own AOC license to operate the current fleet of four DC-10-30F on a sub-lease arrangement with the mother company.
Aeroflot will retain full ownership in the new company.
In 2004, Aeroflot generated a total of 145,600 tonnes of air cargo and mail, 58,600 tonnes of which was carried on freighters and the remaining volumes in the Aeroflot passenger aircraft cargo holds.
The planned corporatisation will allow the new company to focus entirely on cargo business, and pave the way for the replacement, long over-due, of the fuel-inefficient DC-10-30F freighters by higher-capacity converted MD-11 freighter aircraft.
