JAN 14, 2005 (newstodate): Nigerian authorities have detected 70 illegal airstrips and airports scattered around the country.
The illegal airports were discovered by a committee set up on the monitoring and control of private airports in the country.
While encouraging the development of airports, heliports and airstrips, the Nigerian authorities invariably demands such facilities to be properly licensed and controlled.
The illegal facilities may have been used for illegal arms dealing, drug traffic and other criminal purposes.
