SEP 02, 2004 (newstodate): Taiwan's air cargo shippers are expecting airlines to increase ex-Taiwan cargo rates "soon".
Expectations are that rates may be increased by 10-15 percent in September, compared to last month when rates also incrased by 15 percent.
Thus, one kilo of a sub 45-kilos cargo will cost 110 Taiwan dollars on flights to the US east coast, and one kilo of a cargo weighing over 1,000 kilos will be charged with 90 Taiwan dollars for the same destination.
The Taiwanese carriers have notified exporters that they are very likely to further hike rates in the upcoming Christmas-shopping season.
Carriers are reportedly pointing to rising fuel prices, booming demands from exporters, and US Customs' implementation of electronic clearance services under the Air-AMS scheme, which charges USD10 additional fees on each air cargo shipment as a part of the country's anti-terrorist measures.
