SEP 02, 2004 (newstodate): The Asian Development Bank, ADB, has launched a technical assistance project worth USD1 million to carry out a feasibility study on the rehabilitation of Afghan domestic airports in remote provinces.
Afghanistan has 21 domestic airports for civil aviation, of which four only four: Herat, Jalalabad, Kunduz, and Mazar-e-Sharif, have paved runways and aprons.
In the absence of a railway system and
functioning river ports, Afghanistan largely
depends on the road network and air transport
for the movement of people and goods.
-Due to the prolonged conflict, civil aviation infrastructure has severely deteriorated, and skilled manpower has been depleted. A massive rebuilding effort is needed to restore these to a standard that assures safe
and efficient civil aviation services, says ADB.
ADB's 2004-2006 program for Afghanistan will include 570 million dollars in soft loans, with another 30 million dollars in grants from the ADB's technical assistance fund.
Among the issues to be included is the strengthening of the country's regional airports, following on the recommendations of the feasibility study.
