SEP 06, 2004 (newstodate): Ireland has gained recognition that its aviation security measures comply with UK and EU requirements, and can now allow "known" shippers in Ireland to ship cargo without blanket re-screening in the UK.
For a period following the Gulf conflict of 2003, all air cargo shipments from Ireland were treated as "unknown" cargo on arrival in the UK, and subjected to full security screening at the UK airport of departure.
This was a duplication of security processes which had already taken place in Ireland, leading to additional costs and delays for the many shipments which transit the UK because of the limited international direct air services from Ireland.
Irish shipments may now go ready for carriage directly into UK airports, and American Airlines Cargo became the first to ship two shipper-built pallets from Ireland after the recent memorandum of understanding between the British and Irish governments regarding aviation security was signed.
