SEP 16, 2004 (newstodate): Almaty Airport, Kazakhstan, is poised for growth and fights to secure a hub status.
-Kazakhstan's volumes of air cargo do not warrant any immediate increase in cargo volumes, but we a ideally positioned to serve as an operational stop for flights between the Far East and Europe, says Vailiy V. Ni, Almaty airfreight director.
Among the airline already operating at the airport are Lufthansa Cargo, Alitalia, British Airways and others.
-In terms of operations we have seen an annual increase by 15-20 percent during the last two years, and we have abundant infrastructure capacity to support this growth in the future as well, he says.
Next month the airport will complete a project to increase terminal floor space by 900 sq.m., and work has just started on a new runway.
