AUG 31, 2004 (newstodate): Iraq's civil aviation will soon see the launch of the first Iraq Airways scheduled flights since the imposition of UN sanction in the early 90'ies.
On Monday, the airline performed its first take-off from Amman, Jordan, to Baghdad with a newly acquired Boeing 737.
The flight was a a technical aircraft transfer, with only Iray Airways staff onboard.
Royal Jordanian is currently the only commercial airline providing commercial flights to Iraq but it still depends on specific permissions to operate into and out of Baghdad.
Iraqi Airways' fleet of grounded aircraft comprises ageing Boeing 727 and 707 that will hardly return to active service.
Before the first Gulf War, Iraq ordered four Airbus aircraft that were, however, never delivered as sanctions were imposed.
