AUG 06, 2004 (newstodate): After 35 years of operations at the Atlantic Faroe Island, Maersk Air has announced its decision to pull out of the traffic.
The two routes to the Faroe Islands from Copenhagen and Billund, respectively, will cease from October 31, leaving Atlantic Airways alone in the market.
From that date, the two airlines have agreed on a cooperation to transfer passengers between the Faroe Islands and Maersk Air's international network.
Among the reasons for laying down the route, Maersk Air points to the limited efficiency of the short runway at Vagar Airport that cannot handle traffic with a fully-loaded Boeing 737.
SAS has reportedly not ruled out the possibility of entering the route in competition with Atlantic Airways.
