AUG 13, 2004 (newstodate): Atlantic Airways is in talks with Faroe Island's exports of fresh fish to find viable solutions to the demand for cargo uplift.
After Maersk Air leaves the market late in October, the scarcity of cargo uplift will be further accentuated, with Atlantic Airways alone to shoulder the task.
-We will look into all options including own cargo flights or a joint-venture with another party, says Magni Arge, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-The demand for uplift of fresh fish to the European market is significant, but the problem is that the fish wants to go to the UK, Central or Southern Europe, while our imports mainly come from Denmark, he says.
Mr Arge does not rute out, however, dedicated cargo flights, but the aircraft type must be able to operate at the short runways of Vagar Airport that will accomodate aircraft types not larger than the BAe 146 currently used by the airline.
-We are talking to the exporters here, but we will obviously need a firm commitment from potential customers to launch a cargo service, and this has not so far been on the table, says Magni Arge.
Earlier attempts by Maersk Air Cargo to market the idea of a freighter service eventually failed to attract commitments from Faroese exporters despite much positive applause
