JUL 01, 2004 (newstodate): The modernised Astana International Airport will provide several new features designed to turn the airport into a competitive transit airport, located at the intersection of flights to South East Asia, Europe, Far and Middle East.
Given high priority among the country's projects, the new airport will introduce automation of cargo processing, increase the airport's operational capacity and provide a new infrastrcuture and a range of technical airport facilities.
The project includes construction of new taxi runways, a tripling of the number of ramps, new airfield lighting control systems, meteorological, and navigating equipment, and reduncant sources of power supply.
The project is run by a consortium of Siemens (Germany), Marubeni Corporation (Japan), John Lang (UK), and Alarco (Turkey) as the general contractor.
