JUN 24, 2004 (newstodate): Danish company Terma has become the first provider of ADS-B ground stations to successfully integrate the two competing technologies, Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcasting (ADS-B) Mode S and ADS-B VDL Mode 4 within a single ground station.
Until a recent successful test of integrating the two technologies, airports and operators have been forced to make a choice, or to run each mode separately on an own dedicated ground station, significantly increasing costs and work loads.
Terma's solution combining the two ADS-B modes will support the International Civil Aviation Organisations free sky project, which will enable pilots to optimise flight routings.
