JUN 21, 2004 (newstodate): According to the latest cargo statistics from Stockholm Arlanda, the airport saw its volumes decreasing by 15.5 percent to 7,619 tonnes in April.
This follows on a long series of declining volumes at the Swedish capital airport. But even if some underlaying changes in cargo patterns may be taking place, the picture is far from true, according the airport.
-We have detected serious errors in the statistical system and the way figures are reported, says Christer Holst, Stockholm Arlanda cargo marketing manager.
-In addition to some malfunctions in the system we have probably also aggregated some problems and errors over a longer period, so the net effect is that we cannot rely at all on the statistics generated.
Mr Holst says it will probably take "another few months" to verify the problems and replace the current procedures with updated ones.
And in the meantime noone really knows if air cargo is on the rise or declining.
According to the existing statitics, the airport generated a total of 104,978 tonnes of air cargo in 2003.
