JUN 10, 2004 (newstodate): Among its strategic goals, Slovenian airport Ljubljana is targetting a cargo volume at 15,000 tonnes by 2010.
-In recent years the level of cargo handled has been slightly above 12,000 tonnes per year. This year, we expect to reach the same volume, or possibly even one or two percent higher, says Jure Meznarsic, Ljubljana Airport commercial director.
-Cargo has been one of our strategic development issues for many years. In the late seventies we built a 5,800 sq.m. cargo terminal, and we have the capacity to handle any cargo aircraft including An-124.
-In order to reach the target set in our strategy, we entered into a joint venture earlier this year with Intereuropa, Slovenia's leading logistics company, and this JV will take over cargo handling.
-Working within this JV will provide us with more direct acces to the customers, and the market we are aiming at comprises not only Slovenia but also NE Italy and parts of Croatia.
-Courier and express business is also seen as a potential business area for us. Ljubljana could become a hub for Balkans area and there has already been some progress in this field, says Mr Meznarsic.
