JUN 23, 2004 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo does not foresee any major impact in the Norwegian airfreight market after Continental Airlines' new route into Oslo.
-Continental's airfreight capacity is rather limited, so we do not expect the market situation to change much, says Kjell Westby, Lufthansa Cargo Norway manager.
-We have quite a strong traffic to a number of destinations in the USA, mainly serving the oil industry that generates much volume both import- and export-wise.
-We have seen a steady growth in the Norwegian North Atlantic freight, and we expect this to continue. And while we have seen rates down in this segment, too, it does not compare to what happens in the Far Eastern segment, he says.
-What did impact the market situation here was SAS' pull-out of the New York-Oslo route this spring. This clearly influenced our share of the market positively, and there is no sign that this will change with the entry of Continental Airlines.
From Januar to April Norway generated a total of 2,262 tonnes of IATA-airfreight destined for N America.
Dominated by exports of salmon to the Far East, the Norwegian IATA cargo volumes rank New York as low as No 10 among the top-30 destinations with a total of 419 tonnes during January-April.
