JUN 08, 2004 (newstodate): In May, Icelandair Cargo carried a total of 3,371 tonnes, up 34 percent on last year.
-Cargo to and from Iceland grew by 25 percent, and transit cargo between Europe and N America was up by no less than 106 percent, says Petur J Eiriksson, Icelandair Cargo managing director.
-For the period January to May, our total tonnages have grown by 28 percent to 14,651 tonnes. Imports to and exports from Iceland have risen by 24 percent to 12,896 tonnes, and our transit volumes have grown by 61 percent over last year, he says.
-We are seeing strong growth in all markets, and this includes a steady growth in the market for fresh fish and other seafood from Iceland. The demand is seen on both sides of the Atlantic, reflecting changes in consumer demands towards more fresh products on the shelves.
-The significant increase in imports to Iceland of course reflects a boomoing Icelandic economy with growth in both investments and consumption, says Mr Eiriksson.
