JUN 17, 2004 (newstodate): On June 15, an Alitalia Cargo Boeing 747 freighter made the company's first en-route stop at Almaty International Airport, Kazakhstan.
The company has decided to make Almaty its technical stop point on Far Eastern routes from Italy to China and Japan.
Alitalia Cargo estimates the new operation to save some 15 percent in fuel costs compared to the earlier routings.
Kazakhstan hopes this will also pave the way for a passenger light by Alitalia between Rome and Almay International Airport.
