JUN 15, 2004 (newstodate): From June 1, Palanga Airport, Lithuania, has closed its import/export air cargo terminal.
The airport finds that the terminal is no longer needed after the country's admission into the EU from May 1, as goods may now circulate freely within the community.
Ship spares, however, remain the airport's largest cargo category, and in many cases they either arrive from non-EU Norway or from EU, but destined for conseignees that are non-EU companies.
To alleviate the situation, Lithuanian transport and logistics company Interekspresas has developed a special service comprising arranging transit procedures, customs clearance and letters of guarantee for Air Lithuania and Lithuanian Airlines at Palanga to bring the shipments from Palanga Airport to the Klaipeda Sea Port.
