MAY 26, 2004 (newstodate): The East European markets are playing a significant role in the plans for future development of air cargo at Zurich Airport.
-Right now we are experiencing a decline in total air cargo volumes at Zurich Airport, down 15.4 percent in April, to a total of 29,328 tonnes, says Elke Koehler, Unique manager cargo marketing.
-But while the flown volumes dropped by 20.1 percent to 20,317 tonnes, trucked airfreight totalling 9,012 tonnes fared better - down by 2.4 percent only in April, she says.
-The underlying reasons for the undisputed decline in total air cargo volumes are of course the sustained reduction of SWISS operations, and the suspension since mid-February of the joint SWISS freighter operation with Polar Air Cargo, leaving UPS as the sole freighter operator with limited services to Cologne on small Fokker aircraft only.
-We are convinced, however, that the sustained growth rates in the East European markets will provide Zurich Airport with future potentials for growth even given the current limited cargo uplift capacity.
-The airport still plays a significant role as an efficient transfer point for trucked East European airfreight to and from European destinations and SWISS, Air France, Lufthansa Cargo operations, says Mrs Koehler.
