MAY 24, 2004 (newstodate): 68 delegates representing airlines, freight forwarders, airports, handling companies and other members of the Cool Chain Association are meeting today at Danish Billund Airport to discuss a set of industry standards designed for the temperature-controlled shipments including perishables.
A draft of the standards will be presented by Germanischer Lloyd for approval by Cool Chain Association's annual general meeting after a series of workshops to be conducted on Tuesday.
-Should we wait for a series of standards on the level of ISO, the process would require several years. We need industrial standards now to secure an even level of quality across the industry, so we have decided to make a short-cut on our own, says Bernhard Stander, Germanischer Lloyd managing director.
Mr Stander says the meeting is also attended by people from the maritime transport sectors, reflecting the fact that a multi-modal approach is increasingly required by shippers and consigneees.
