MAY 14, 2004 (newstodate): Volga-Dnepr Group's new Boeing 747 freighter company, Airbridge Cargo has made its debut, flying from from Beijing to Luxembourg via Novosibirsk on May 12.
-AirBridge Cargo is unique in being the only scheduled Russian maindeck cargo operator capable of moving outsize shipments into the Russian marketplace that do not require a full charter. This is of particular value to the oil and gas and mining sectors, says Stan Wraight, AirBridge exec director.
With a fleet initially comprising two Boeing 747-200 freighters, Airbridge is now operating four flights a week, two services from Shanghai and two frequencies from Beijing via Moscow and Novosibirsk to Luxembourg.
With the arrival of the second aircraft in June, AirBridge will introduce additional Shanghai services and open a new route from
Tianjin.
Currently operating under the umbrella of Volga-Dnepr, Airbeidge will obtain its own operating certificate and become a fully independent airline by 2005.
The airline has appointed Air Cargo Trader (ACT) and International Aviation Services (IAS) as its GSA partners in Europe.
AirBridge Cargo's long-term strategic development plan is to operate a combined fleet with 747s for trunk routes and Russian-built aircraft - TU-204Cs or IL-76s - for regional feeder services.
Within 5-6 years, the airline expects to operate up to six Boeing 747Fs and 4-6 Russian jets.
